A partially colored working drawing on cream paper shows the wall structure of a church, with two registers of rounded arches and ornamentation. Handwritten notes in pencil are on the bottom.

When architect Henry Hobson Richardson invited the young artist John La Farge to provide, on a quick timeline, an interior decor for his iconic church building, Trinity Church in Copley Square, the challenges seemed unsurmountable. La Farge succeeded and thereby established himself as a leading artist and decorator of the Gilded Age. In this seminar, art historians and collectors John F. and Mary K. McGuigan will be in conversation with curator Joachim Homann about 18 of La Farge’s design drawings from 1876, which recently entered the collections.
