Book Talk with Janet Rich-Edwards

The second installment in our Radcliffe Book Talk series features Janet Rich-Edwards RI ’19, author of Canticle (Spiegel & Grau, 2025). A historical novel set in 13th-century Bruges, Canticle tells the story of a young woman whose spiritual devotion and search for independence draw her into conflict with the medieval Church and its power structures.

Speaker(s): Janet Rich-Edwards is an associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, where she also serves as director of lifecourse epidemiology at the Mary Horrigan Connors Center for Women’s Health Research, and an associate professor of epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Canticle is her first novel and was longlisted for the Carol Shields Prize, named book of the week by People magazine, and listed as a New York Times editor’s pick, as well as a top pick by Real Simple, Indie Next, and Amazon, among others. The Minneapolis Star Tribune lauded Canticle as “an auspicious debut,” and the Los Angeles Times noted that in reading Canticle, “You’ll be reminded that change can and does happen, one determined woman at a time.” Rich-Edwards graduated from Harvard-Radcliffe College and earned an MPH from the University of North Carolina and an SCD from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
