Carmen Winant: Double Jeopardy Exhibition

In “Double Jeopardy,” artist Carmen Winant explores the early formation of the anti-domestic violence movement through archival video, photographs, and documents from the 1970s and ’80s. Marking her first exploration of video as a medium and historical subject, Winant draws on more than 200 videotapes from the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, materials from Harvard Radcliffe Institute’s Schlesinger Library, and the personal archive of activist Yolanda Bako.

Through video-still portraits, moving-image works, and collages, Winant illuminates how feminist organizing, survivor advocacy, and emerging video technology converged to support a growing grassroots movement. Rather than treating archival materials as static historical records, “Double Jeopardy” brings overlooked images and voices into the present, recognizing the often-unacknowledged work of survivors and advocates whose efforts laid the foundation for ongoing struggles toward safety, justice, and autonomy.
