In this photomontage, a smiling young man stands in a wooded setting gesturing toward a painting that appears to float. It shows three men wearing hats in an interior where cotton is spread out on a table.

On this tour, Luke Tan ’28 will explore human efforts to control and own aspects of the natural environment and the implications for how we value materials, relationships, and experiences. The stops on the tour are: Large, Broad-Shouldered Jar with Decoration of Fish and Aquatic Plants, from Ming dynasty China (Jiajing period, 1522–66); Edgar Degas’s painting Cotton Merchants in New Orleans (1873); and Franz Marc’s painting Grazing Horses IV (1911).
